Fertility Evaluation
What is a fertility evaluation?
A typical fertility evaluation will include a thorough review of your personal, medical, and family history, a discussion of your prior fertility testing and treatments, along with a consultation with Dr Davies. A variety of diagnostic tests will be performed to rule out any underlying issues, including bloodwork, ultrasounds, an evaluation of your uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, and for a male partner, a semen analysis. Once completed, you will schedule another consultation with Dr. Davies to review your individual results, and determine all available treatment options to help maximize your fertility success. Fertility Tests for Women
We realize that you may feel alone when facing fertility issues, but rest assured, you are not. Infertility affects nearly 15% of the population, which is about 7.5 million people. So while this is a very prevalent problem, the good news is that we are finding new and exciting ways to treat infertility, each and every day.
After your initial consultation with Dr. Davies, your next several visits to our office will be for diagnostic testing to evaluate your ovarian reserve and endocrine status, which may include the following:
- Vaginal ultrasound between cycle days 2-4 for Antral Follicle Count (AFC)
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) level between cycle days 2-4
- Estradiol (E2) level between cycle days 2-4
- Anti-Mullerian Hormone level (AMH)
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone level (TSH)
- Prolactin level
- Genetic Panel to determine your personal carrier status
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG), may be needed. This test is performed between cycle days 6-12 to evaluate the fallopian tubes and uterus, and involves placing a radiographic dye solution into the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes and then taking X-ray images to evaluate your anatomy and tubal patency.
- Hysterosonogram (HSN), which uses saline to evaluate the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, or a FemVue Hysterosalpingogram (Sono HSG), which uses a combination of saline and air, may be administered between cycle days 6-12 to help to rule out defects in uterine anatomy and tubal patency.
Fertility Testing for Men
Roughly 40% of infertility issues can be attributed to male factor, so it is important to rule out any abnormalities. A semen analysis is a test that is performed to evaluate the health of a man’s sperm. A complete semen analysis measures the amount and quality of the semen and sperm, including count, which measures the number of sperm within a semen sample, motility, which measures progressive movement of the sperm, and morphology, which measures the size and shape of the sperm. Based on the results, treatment can be recommended to improve sperm health and increase your chances of conceiving a child.

What is a fertility assessment?
If you’re thinking about beginning your journey to parenthood, and want to gain a better understanding of your fertility potential before you start trying, it may be time to schedule a fertility assessment appointment. Or maybe you’re not actively trying to conceive, but want to have a child one day and are curious about your biological clock. A fertility assessment can help you develop a better understanding of your fertility potential.
What happens during a fertility assessment?
On the first day of your menstrual cycle, you will call our office to schedule an appointment for blood work and a transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate your ovarian reserve, most often performed on days 2-4 of your cycle. The bloodwork will measure your hormone levels, including follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, and anti-mullerian levels. These hormone levels help to determine your individual fertility potential and are adjusted for your age. The ultrasound will determine your antral follicle count, which is how many egg containing follicles are developing on your ovaries. Once these diagnostic tests are completed, you will schedule a consultation with Dr. Davies to review the results.
