Unexplained Infertility

What Is Unexplained Infertility?

Unexplained fertility is the diagnosis a couple receives after having a complete fertility evaluation and no discrete issue that seems to be hindering conception is determined. This means that it is confirmed that a woman is ovulating regularly, has open fallopian tubes, no uterine issues such as polyps, intrauterine adhesions, fibroids or anomalies and no signs of endometriosis. Her hormones are at normal levels and all other fertility tests assessing ovarian reserve have come back in the normal range. The male partner’s sperm has also been found to be normal.

Next Steps

Approximately 1 in 5 couples will be found to have unexplained infertility. We understand that receiving an unexplained infertility diagnosis can be frustrating for the couple because there seems to be no root cause for their trouble conceiving. It can be easier to understand an issue if you have answers to the “why.” This does not mean that you are definitely incapable of achieving pregnancy. Many couples with unexplained infertility have gone on to have healthy babies after IUI, IVF or even naturally. Given the fact that all women occasionally ovulate genetically abnormal eggs which is correlated with female age, IVF is often successful to help us further explore what is happening with unexplained infertility couples. By examining embryos and potentially testing them with PGT-A testing to determine which embryos have a normal set of chromosomes, hopefully we will be able to give this subset of patients an answer and change the odds into their favor. We will work with you to determine what the best course of action is for you, as each couple has different needs.
